The L.A. Mayer Museum for Islamic Art houses the permanent collection
of Islamic art, ranging from soon after the birth of Islam in the 7th
century to more recent items dating from the 19th century CE. The
exhibits will take you through the development of Islamic art through
the ages and the exhibition halls are arranged in
chronological and geographical order, in accordance with the various
dynasties.
The collections include archeological finds from the Umayyad period and
the Abbasid, Seljuk, Fatimid, Mamluk, Mongol, Timurid,
Safavid, Kajari, Moghul and Ottoman periods. Don't miss the collection of
jewelry from all parts of the Islamic Empire.
The exhibition brings together a diverse range of art, from
beautifully calligraphied manuscripts, embroidered rugs,
chessboards and chess pieces, dominoes and ancient playing cards,
jewelry, silver vessels. Don't miss the fascinating weapons exhibits
including bayonets, bows and arrows, daggers, knives,
swords and axes, ancient rifles and
pistols as well as ancient armor, helmets, gunpowder pouches, unit
insignias, and more.
In parallel, the Museum houses more than 180
watches and clocks in its Sir David Salomons collection. This
significant and rare collection includes a ground-breaking group of
clocks by Abraham Louis Breguet, who was the inventor of some of the
greatest technological
innovations in modern watch-making.
